| Well, it has finally come to this. You see, most of the time I play games that aren't that talked about and if they are, I can easily take something different from it than others did. However, for this game, I don't have much to say that others haven't already said about it. Shelves of literature have been written about this game, dissecting it like film scholars did to Citizen Kane. I mean, what do I really have to add to....Super Mario Brothers? It's a game that started a company, that brought forth a franchise like no other, and that saved the video game industry. But, it doesn't matter if I have anything to add or not, I chose to play this game, put it on my Top 50 list, and review it. So, like it or not, let's dig into Super Mario Brothers.
Years after the events of Donkey Kong, Mario and his brother Luigi run a plumbing business. However, through some wacky (and possibly drug-induced) events, they find this pipe and go through it to the Mushroom Kingdom. Instead of exploring the kingdom and living like kings, they find out that the fair maiden Princess Peach has been kidnaped by the evil King Koopa; Bowser! So now Mario and Luigi have to go through a lot of worlds to find the castle and kick Bowsers ass multiple times since all you seem to rescue are the Toad Retainers who then tell you that the Princess is in another castle. |

What really made this game is that it was the game to really popularized the side-scrolling aspects of games. You see, before this, games had one screen and then when you went to the sides, the game would scroll to a new screen. In Super Mario Brothers, there is just one giant screen per stage that you can move without you waiting for the screen. Granted you could only move right but it was something. Another thing was the controls, you can actually control how fast and how far Mario could move and jump. That is the basis for all platformers that followed Super Mario Brothers wake. I mean, this game violently changed what video games could do and its impact is still felt to this day.
Then there's the fact that Mario is a global symbol for the video game market due to this game. There is not a person alive who does not know what Mario looks like, what he sounds like, and even knows the tune for Stage 1-1. That's another thing that I want to talk about is the music. With 8-bit capabilities, the score here is one of the most memorable in video game history. Like I said, everyone knows the score to Stage 1-1, Stage 1-2 and even the underwater levels. I put it right up there with Chrono Trigger, Wild Arms, and even Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden. I mean seriously, this game is just that well-known. |
| This game still holds up, even today. The game is pretty difficult, but it is still a boat load of fun as you navigate through the levels and dodge every thing that Bowser throws at you. Everything about this game is iconic, including the music and controls. This started off a revolution of fun, fast-paced gameplay that hasn't stopped since it started and will never stop. So thank Super Mario Brothers for being awesome. Without it, you probably be off reading a book or something like that. - Patrick |
